Three causes of foot arch pain that aren’t plantar fasciitis

Our arches have to absorb and redistribute so much weight and energy, it’s no wonder arch pain is such a common complaint. One of the most common foot injuries that affects the arches and causes heel pain is plantar fasciitis. This is inflammation and pain of the plantar fascia, which is a bundle of tissue that connects the heel to the forefoot. While this is a fairly well-known condition, it is not the only cause of arch pain.

If you’re looking for a diagnosis of foot arch pain that you believe is not plantar fasciitis, it’s crucial to see a doctor for a positive diagnosis and treatment plan. Different conditions require different treatments, and attempting to self-diagnose can easily cause more harm than good.

To help you work with qualified professionals on a more informed basis, we’re sharing the following helpful guide to some of the potential causes patients are often diagnosed with as the source of arch pain.

Other possible sources of symptoms

Here are some of the other conditions and injuries that can affect the arches and lead to the development of pain:

  1. Cavus foot — This is another term for abnormally high arches. The causes can range from inherited structure to neurological conditions that include cerebral palsy. Although not always painful, some people with cavus foot do experience aches and pains in the foot.
  2. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction — Also known as PTTD, this injury of the tendons that connect the inner foot to the calf muscles can be a source of foot pain, especially the arches.
  3. Overpronation — While also an underlying contributor to plantar fasciitis, excessive inward foot rotation known as overpronation can also simply result in foot arch pain as a result of the extra foot movement involved.

As you work with your doctor or other medical professional to diagnose and treat arch pain, orthotic insoles are a common recommendation to relieve these symptoms.
