Three benefits of custom orthotics for runners

Runners across the country are spending money on custom orthotics to help them improve their distance and speed. Custom orthotics cushion and support the foot to reduce fatigue and joint pain, factors that are particularly common when running long distances or running regularly. Those are not the only benefits to choosing custom orthotics for running. Check out these top three reasons why runners are choosing orthotics as one of their top pieces of gear.

  1. Better running patterns — According to Runner’s World, only 25% of the population has a normal running pattern, meaning that 75% of the population either overpronates or underpronates while running. Pronating is the measure of the turn of the foot during gait. Most people either walk more on the outside of their foot or the inside, both of which can cause ankle joint issues and foot pain. A custom orthotic can support the foot in a way that reduces the turn outward or inward, straightening your running pattern and thereby reducing your risk of injury.
  2. Better arch support — One of the most common complaints among runners is pain in the bottom (or arch) of the foot, also known as plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is the major ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel to the toes. When this ligament has to support the entire weight of the body (especially a body that is pounding on the pavement from running) without the proper arch support, it can become stressed and injured. This causes chronic pain and may even take up to 10 months to heal nonsurgically — that’s 10 months without running! For most runners, that’s unfathomable. A custom orthotic is fitted to provide the specific support your arch needs in order to reduce foot pain and the chance of developing plantar fasciitis.
  3. Better back support Constantly pounding on your feet without the proper support can also impact the lumbar spine, causing severe and chronic lower back pain. However, supporting your feet in custom orthotics can reduce the risk of developing lower back pain from constant running.
